History
GNABC was founded in Victoria in 1981. We became an RNABC professional Practice Group in 1986. Local chapters in other communities began forming in 1990. As members of GNABC, con-joint membership in Canadian Gerontological Nurseing Association was offered in 1997.
In1999, Canadian Nursing Association recognized Gerontology as a specialty and the first national Certification exam for gerontology was written. Although fairly new as a Specialty, Gerontology has the highest membership nationally, with BC the leader.
Recent changes with RNABC becoming the College of Registered Nurses of BC (CRNBC), and the introduction of the Health Professions Act, precipitated the move of GNGBC, in 2008, to become the first stand alone speciality association, now known as the Gerontolgical Nurses Association of BC (GNABC).
GNABC now offers full membership to Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses within the province of BC.
In order to facilitate competent responsible collaborative healthcare for the older adult other health care professionals are encouraged to join GNABC as affiliate members.
